How the Marine Corps PFT is scored

The Physical Fitness Test has three events, each worth up to 100 points: an upper-body event (dead-hang pull-ups or two-minute push-ups), a forearm plank and a 3-mile run. Standards vary by age group and, except for the plank, by sex. Your total out of 300 decides your class, which feeds into promotions.

What changed in 2026

From 1 January 2026, Marines holding one of the combat arms primary MOSs are scored on the male tables for their age group whatever their sex, and must reach 210 points. Tick the combat arms box in the calculator to apply that standard.

Pull-ups or push-ups?

Push-ups top out at 70 points, so a perfect push-up score still costs you 30 points against a perfect pull-up score. If you can do the minimum pull-ups, it is almost always worth training for them. Strength work such as weighted negatives and rows, plus frequent submaximal sets through the week, tends to build pull-up numbers faster than testing maximum reps.

Disclaimer

This is an independent training tool, not an official Marine Corps product. Points between minimum and maximum are interpolated and may differ from the printed table by about a point. Always confirm standards with current Marine Corps orders and your unit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum PFT score?

300 points: 100 each for pull-ups, the plank and the 3-mile run. Choosing push-ups caps the upper-body event at 70 points, so the best possible total with push-ups is 270.

What do I need to pass the PFT?

At least 150 points in total and the minimum in every event, worth 40 points (60 for female pull-ups). Since 1 January 2026, Marines in combat arms MOSs are scored on the male tables for their age and need at least 210 points.

What score is a 1st class PFT?

235 to 300 is 1st class, 200 to 234 is 2nd class and 150 to 199 is 3rd class.

Is the plank the same for everyone?

Yes. One plank table covers all ages and both sexes: 1:10 earns the 40-point minimum and 3:45 earns 100.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses the published minimum and maximum for every age group and interpolates the points in between, so it can differ from the printed table by about a point. Your unit's official score in MCTIMS is the one that counts.
